AQMD Awards Contract for 30 Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles Quantum Fuel Systems of Irvine, California has announced that it has received a $2.1 million contract from the California South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) to develop 20 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). One requirement for the project is that the 20 PHEVs are able to achieve 35 - 40 miles on electric only driving. The project calls for the conversion of 2008 Ford Escape Hybrids into plug-in hybrid vehicles. Advanced Lithium Power Inc., will supply the lithium ion battery pack for the vehicles. This project is one of many initiatives by the AQMD to reduce automotive emissions that contribute to global warming in the Southern California region.
