Hybrid Car Sales Lead Toyota to # 1 Automaker
in 2007
Lead by its hybrid car and vehicle sales Toyota expects to
become the world's largest automotive manufacturer in 2007.
In June 2006, Toyota jumped past Ford Motor Company for the
first time in U. S. sales.
Toyota also expects to become the number
2 automaker in the U. S. in early 2007 ahead of Ford but
behind General Motors. Toyota has the best selling car
in the U. S., the Camry and the best-selling hybrid, the
Prius.
Toyota employs 39,000 workers in North America as compared
to General Motors, which employs 141,000. Toyota has
announced that it will build 9.4 million vehicles worldwide
in 2007. General Motors does not give out its vehicle
sales statistics, but experts estimate the number will
be around 9.2 million.

Toyota has stated that its U. S. sales have been spurred by
the demand for smaller, more economical cars and hybrid vehicles
in the face of rising gas prices and a new environmental consciousness.
